HOW IT ALL STARTED...
Fifteen years ago, I was sitting around a dinner table with a group of people—some close friends, some complete strangers. The food was great, the conversation was lively, and eventually, as often happens, the discussion turned to politics.
When it was my turn to speak, someone across the table stopped me mid-sentence.
"Aren't you gay?"
The question caught me off guard.
"Yes," I replied. "Why?"
She stood up, pointed across the table, and said, "You can't be conservative and gay. It's just not allowed. You're hurting other gay people."
I remember sitting there wondering what had just happened.
Not because someone disagreed with me. Healthy disagreement has always been part of my life.
What surprised me was the assumption that a single characteristic of mine was supposed to determine everything else I believed.
To me, being gay was my sexuality—not my politics, my values, or my worldview.
